Interesting problem relating to “kind/kindness”: I have trouble figuring out how to say that in Dutch. Vriendelijk? Zachtaardig? These seem wrong because their English cognates would be, but I haven’t found a better word.

Yes, you're right, there's not really a good translation back into Dutch. We'll just have to make do with "vriendelijk" :-)
Rats, I was hoping you'd point out something obvious I was missing. :)
It's weird, because the Dutch people I know (no doubt a small sample, but nevertheless) are without exception very kind.
