Just caught up with this. I just watched Oppenheimer. I thought it was German until they said it was Dutch!

Ha! Great to be reminded of this. After writing the newsletter I learned what had happened: the director decided to extensively edit the scene without taking the Dutch lines into account. As he doesn't speak Dutch, the result was just an incomprehensible jumble.

Correction: Hoytema has been in The Netherlands within 20 years. I had the chance of talking with him in Emmeloord during their recordings of Dunkirk at Urk.

One note regarding Van Hoytema’s Dutch pronunciation, from this clip it’s clear he speaks standard Dutch without any obvious accent:

Richard! This is the kind of investigative journalism we need, well done! You are right, Van Hoytema does have a perfectly normal Dutch accent, so we can dismiss that theory. Thank you for finding the video :-)
