I think that with "deposit" you're referring to a small fee that's charged for e.g. glass bottles that's then refunded when the bottle is returned—? That is (or used to be) common in the US; different states had different requirements for this. I haven't seen it in a while, probably because in most places there are dedicated recycle bins.

Thanks Mike! The amazing Wikipedia article below actually lists all the states in the US that have container deposit legislation, with details and everything. In my website article, I mention the term CRV (California Redemption Value), which is the term used in California for such a deposit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_deposit_legislation_in_the_United_States
